PARTY ON: TIPS FOR ENTERTAINING ON A BUDGET

Deciding to throw a party can be both exciting and overwhelming. The role of hostess is a blast, but spending a lot of money to pull everything from decorations to libations together isn’t always feasible. You don’t have to burst your budget though to throw memorable festivities. All you need is a little ingenuity, DIY ambitions and a bit of pitching in from your guests for a sensational bash. Consider these tips if you plan on entertaining on a budget.
Entertaining on a budget
Select a Singular Theme - If you’re wanting to leave a lasting impression about your party it can be hard not to throw every decoration in sight into your tablescape and theme, but some of the best evenings are spent with simple accents. Selecting a theme like bold colors or summer florals is an easy way to give the event a little flair without buying all new decorations. If you incorporate flowers, don’t get carried away with garlands and candles as well–instead select only one. This helps with last minute entertaining too. Going overboard can be distracting instead of intriguing.
Incorporate Nature - Another fantastic way to save is by making those accents ones of nature. Flowers purchased from the grocery store can add a pop of color without costing too much. If you’re looking for an even less expensive option, search your surroundings. Succulents can be cut off and organized in a small clear vase for a minimalistic but lively center piece. Not to mention they won’t die like flowers so you can decorate with succulents long after your gathering. You can use shells or varying stones (how cool would a crystal centerpiece be?) or even toss together pretty leaf combinations for an earthy vibe.

Embrace BYOB - Beyond decorations, alcohol can be steep. If you’re hosting a brunch with mimosas or evening cocktail party, a large portion of your costs can come from providing liquor. Not to mention that not everyone has a massive selection just lying around their house so…have your friends do their part by each bringing a different type of liquor. Then you handle the mixers. Fresh pressed juices, soda and fruit for sangria will allow you to provide a bulk of the ingredients and play role of mixologist. It’s a fun way to diversify cocktail offerings and has everyone pitching in without requiring guests to cook a dish.
Think Bite Sized - Unless you’re hosting a potluck, doing a last minute brunch or really going for it with a fully served dinner party, you don’t need to serve massive dishes. Instead, offer hors d’oeuvres and other snacky foods. It’s likely people will be glued to conversations and nibbling throughout the day. A mix of vegetables, cheeses, fruits, breads and a few spreads is all you really need. Meats can be pricy and aren’t always eaten by guests due to dietary restrictions, which means skipping them will save you even more. Also, finger type foods mean napkins and small plates are more than adequate–you won’t need to purchase extra place settings to accommodate all of your guests.
